Kinky’s campaign furniture up for grabs
Kinky Friedman may have lost the governor’s election, but his furniture is still popular.
His staff posted a notice about their campaign office furniture on the Web site Craigslist — “None of it is TOO horribly ugly, some of it even matches, and all of it is FREE!”
People started showing up Tuesday more than three hours before staff opened the cigar-smoking, black hat-wearing musician and mystery writer’s former campaign office. Altogether, more than 150 people showed up for the giveaway.
Friedman, running as an independent, came in fourth in the five-way race for governor, with 13 percent of the vote.
The furniture liquidation was almost a free-for-all as people snatched desks, cabinets, chairs, couches and computers.
Donna Hughes, searching for merchandise for her flea market, put her hands on three filing cabinets while her son loaded one at a time into their truck. When someone tried to a pull one of the cabinets away, “I took my cane, and I held it out like this and I said ‘Sorry, sir. These are mine,’” she said.
Hughes ended up with four filing cabinets, a desk and an aquarium.
“I’ll take anything I can get my hands on,” said L.B. “Sweed” Swanson, 79, a fan of garage sales.
