Job responsibilities: Directing architectural design for the Asheville office of Calloway Johnson Moore & West.
Description of organization: Architecture, interiors and engineering firm providing services for a variety of commercial, educational and governmental clients, primarily in Western North Carolina.

How you ended up in WNC: I was born in Asheville; it has always been my home.
Family with you here: My wife, Sally, and our youngest daughter, Haley, live with me at our home in Fairview. Our oldest daughter, Megan, is enrolled as a sophomore in the College of Architecture at UNC Charlotte.
Memorable first job: Starting at age 13, I worked summers with my grandfather, Coy Davis, harvesting hay for sale to local farmers. I learned much from my grandfather and will always cherish the time we spent together.
Professional tip: Listen carefully.
Key education and training: I studied engineering for two years at N.C. State University and then left college for three years working as an electrician’s apprentice and a welder. I returned to school and received a bachelor of architecture degree from UNC Charlotte.
Role model: Most definitely my father. His strong work ethic, can-do attitude, community service and devotion to family have had the most profound impact on my life. I also admire Thomas Jefferson. He was truly a Renaissance man.

On your plate in 2007 or 2008: Business-related, finish designs for three major projects. Of particular interest, we are working to develop innovative green design solutions for the renovation of a dormitory at Appalachian State University.
Volunteer/civic interests: As past president of AIANC in 2005, (American Institute of Architects — North Carolina Chapter) I am serving as a co-chair for the Design and Construction Committee. The committee is responsible for developing a new headquarters building in Raleigh for AIANC. We are currently advertising a design competition, exclusively for affiliated North Carolina architects. The project is planned for completion in 2009.
I am chair of the Asheville Design Center board. The Design Center is a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to quality design in WNC. We are currently pursuing an additional I-26 connector alternative for N.C. Department of Transportation consideration. I serve on the UNC Charlotte College of Architecture Advisory Council and as a junior high Sunday school teacher at Central United Methodist Church.
