Box Furniture Luxury Design
May 24th, 2008Meta produces luxury items such as a series of gold boxes by design firm Asymptote.
Last week marked the U.S. debut of a new contemporary design firm backed with a high-caliber roster of designers. Launched by 18th-century antique dealer Mallett Antiques in April at Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, Meta made its first showing in the U.S. market in time for the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF).
The firm offers both luxury design objects and furniture from Asymptote ((Hani Rashid and Lise Anne Couture), Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, Matali Crasset, Tord Boontje, and Wales & Wales. The designers teamed up with more than 50 artisans around the world to complete the collection.
Among the initial rollout of made-to-order pieces are a box of solid gold, a paktong pendant lantern, and an enamel-leaf wardrobe.
“Over the last several years, we have noticed collectors increasingly seeking our advice on where they might find contemporary furniture and objects of equal quality to their existing Mallett antique pieces,” says Henry Neville, president of Mallett. “The genesis of Meta sprang from the simple idea that quality, exquisite attention to detail and thoughtful selection of materials and construction is as desirable and sought after today as it was in the past,” adds Giles Hutchinson Smith, managing director of Mallett & Son (Antiques).
New York’s Openhouse Gallery recently showcased several Mallett products in an exhibit based on the concept of the Garden of Eden.
