Charleston Furniture Store Owners Excited for $1 million Expansion

Right now, the front of a furniture store along Corridor G leaves something to be desired.

Shattered bricks litter the ground around the store’s entrance, and cement blocks are exposed where white bricks used to be.

A temporary blue banner with the store’s name and logo hangs over the entranceway.

But that’s the price of progress at Wells Home Furnishings, where business continues to flourish amid a $1 million expansion project.

New wooden doors will greet customers. The aluminum exterior is being replaced by attractive stone and stucco. An extra 10,000 square feet is being added to the back of the showroom.

New sophisticated and kid-friendly furniture galleries will fill the additional space.

“Must be a pretty good business here,” said Tom Grishaber, the contractor for the job. “They expand every few years.”

Owner John Wells III acknowledged that it’s necessary to keep changing because “things begin looking stale.”

“It’s not just the addition,” he said. “We’re going to kind of be recreating our image.”

Renovations won’t be complete in time for the store’s 14-year anniversary in September. Grishaber’s crew is expected to finish in late October.

Wells received a $900,000 construction loan from WesBanco, and new furniture lines will up the total cost to over $1 million.

Wells and his father, John Jr., opened the store in 1994.
