Call for Papers on Kitchen and Bath Design

The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and the Housing Education and Research Association (HERA) are seeking papers, due April 1, 2008, on kitchen and bath design. Select submissions will be published in Housing and Society, the official HERA journal.

Focusing on kitchen and bath design in the home, the 2008 issue of Housing and Society will be distributed to HERA members, throughout the NKBA, and to libraries around the world. Publication is tentatively slated for Fall 2008.

Most of the selected papers–between 5 and 30 pages long–will be authored by NKBA Endorsed Programs educators, NKBA member adjunct faculty and HERA members, according to NKBA officials.

Showcase Kitchens and Design

John Dalbis, an interior designer for 36 years, showed me pictures of a commercial job from his portfolio and asked me to guess what kind of business it was. Above a fireplace hung a Jackson Pollack-style painting in purples and red; upholstered furniture in warm colors formed a conversation area under skylights; ivory colored columns flanked a series of doors. Neo-classical and contemporary, I guessed it was a financial institution.

“A funeral home,” said Dalbis. “Just because everyone is sad at the death of a loved one, doesn’t mean it has to be gloomy.” Dalbis said when the funeral home held a grand opening, the dean of the mortuary school walked in and said, “To die for.”
