Shattered bricks litter the ground around the store’s entrance, and cement blocks are exposed where white bricks used to be.

A temporary blue banner with the store’s name and logo hangs over the entranceway.

But that’s the price of progress at Wells Home Furnishings, where business continues to flourish amid a $1 million expansion project.

The former Rogers Department Store buzzed Thursday with more than 200 workers transforming the 28th Street SW behemoth into one of the Midwest’s largest independent furniture showcases.

This is where Klingman’s, a storied name in Grand Rapids’ history as Furniture City, will be reborn after more than 112 years in business.

If all goes according to plan, the doors will open on a showcase of more than $15 million of furniture on Sept. 15.

Zeroing in on one portion of the health care market and doing it well has paid off for Cindy Heit-Welch. As president and majority owner of Centerville-based Gem City Home Care, she has led the company to a jump in revenue, a pending relocation to a larger office and a healthy optimism about the future.

Heit-Welch opened the company seven years ago with a plan. Having two health care businesses behind her, one in Dallas in the 1990s and another in Dayton later that decade, Heit-Welch had the experience and a strategy to grow her third firm to high revenues.
